“ We have all a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be.” – Jane Austen

I put it back to my clients each time they ask when they should come back for treatment that they look withen themeselves and decide when they should come back. I connect fully with my clients during the time that I am with them for treatment, but a main goal for the session is to “reintroduce” the client to their own inner guide. This is unsettling for some because they are so trained to look to another to make decisions involving the care of their bodies to the “experts” but really who is more expert at what you are feeling within your body and mind than youself?

The circumstances of life in our modern society can leave little time for inner reflection, so we forget that all of the answers that we desire are within our reach from within. Slowing to connect with our inner light will strip away the need to look to others for validation and encouragment of our actions. The recognition of our inner guide will allow us the freedom to choose what is truly in the highest and best interest for ourselves and that if when our deepest level of healing begins.

Take even a few minutes each day to turn inward and connect with the source within. Find some quite time for reflection and make peace within yourself so that it may emenate to the rest of your family, community, and world.

In our goal oriented society many times we forget that it is sometimes the letting go of our plans that puts us right where we need to be. 99% of my clients report on their initial intake with me that they experience anxiety and stress and that one of their goals for the work is to feel less stress and anxiety. Never in my years of practice has anyone written that they wanted MORE peace or MORE tranquility. There seems to be an idea that the “negative” circumstances of stress and anxiety are necessary for daily living. That leaves the only possible solution as to feel LESS of those negative emotions.

In our amazing and beautifully created bodies we have twice as many nerve receptors for experiencing pleasure as we do for the nerve impulse of pain. That is the real reason that massage makes a person feel better…sometimes euphoric even… because we activate all those pleasure receptors and drown out the signals of pain that were being sent to the brain. So even though our physical makeup is designed to gravitate naturally toward pleasure and away from pain we still hold such ownership of the negative sensations of stress and anxiety that we only have an idea that life can be lived with LESS of those feelings, but not completely free of them. In a documentary on the Dali Lama I heard him say that his first visit to our country left him shocked to find that in the bathroom cabinet of a people who have the highest standard of living in the world lurked an arsenal of sleeping pills and tranquilizers that told a tale that our way of life might look good from the outside, but internally we struggle.

It is time for some paradigm shifts that we seek out MORE of the good things and not just LESS of the negative. It is time that we remove some of the chasm of dissonance between ourselves and our natural world and gaze at the stars and touch the bark of the tree. Take some time each day to realign with the rhythms of nature and feel a part of the life cycle that we are so intricately woven into on this planet. As the desire for this spring time that awaits us after the long winter let us make space in our inner gardens to cultivate MORE peace and tranquility. Listen to Rumi and take a moment each day to step out of time and into love.

How about a paradigm of home for the Holidays that includes a true appreciation for the journey rather than slogging through to the destination. Find your inner home as a place of comfort and containment for this busy time and visit there each day so that you can feel better during the hectic season. Shine an inner light so that when outside influences tempt us to fall back to old patterns we feel strong and content in our own skin.

It is tempting to give into the mindset that there is not enough time to keep up with the extra demands of Holiday time as well as self care. Instead of stopping altogether just try doing 5 yoga poses if you do not have the time to devote to going to a class, if you only have 15 minutes before you have to leave for work then afford yourself 5 to sit in meditation, or if you only have time for a quick bite to eat try steaming some veggies with brown rice instead of the drive through. Finding moments to give to yourself and refill your well will allow you to find more joy and fun during the Holidays. When you have kept up with a commitment to your own health and happiness think of how great you will feel as you enter into a New Year.

What is the antithesis to Movement? Stagnation.

What is serving you to stay in the pond slowing to a reptilian rhythm of life? Is mulling the same story over and over making any changes in your life?
Sure stillness has its merit, but when the stillness follows activity is when the magic happens. Just like Shivasana after Yoga practice, taking a breather after working in your yard, or settling in to sit at the computer to write your Blog after a NIA class!

These are the times when our senses are awakened, so that we can settle into the moment and be open to the beauty around us and within us.

Sometimes the stillness defines itself into our lives by working so deeply into a certain practice or pattern in our lives that we have blinders on to anything else. What if we came into each day with a renewed affirmation that it was FULL of possibility and promise as long as we make some MOVEMENT! What if we took the blinders off for a moment so that we could allow the hearts desire of our most authentic self to direct where our movement will take us?

Then when we return to the stillness to reflect on our movement we are likely to find that we are feeling good because we have moved toward our natural vibration not furiously paddling up stream toward something that is not in line with our highest good, or caught in the pond off to the side still and mossy waiting for some imperceptible change to occur and make our lives different.

I invite you to find some way to Wake up and Shake up! See what happens when you embrace Movement and take a breather from Stagnation.

~Sallie

Talking to a friend who was having a bad day yesterday it became so clear to me that we are conditioned to believe that when things are not going well for us that we are at fault and we, on some level, deserve the difficult time that we are experiencing . As humans, we should all realize that it is our birth rite to achieve and maintain radiant health, feelings of love, and joy.

It is not actually a selfish endeavor to take care of our needs in order to achieve these beneficial states of being. In fact, I would go a step further from just mentioning that it is our right to achieve health and happiness to the assertion that it our DUTY to do the work that we must do to transform our own evolution. When we are at our best, we are not just the best for ourselves. There is a ripple effect that takes place, and, from our radiance, little sparks of inner light awaken in all the other individuals that we encounter. From our children and coworkers to the checkout employee at the store, the effect moves from being to being like the sunlight that dances upon the waves of the ocean. Just as when the cloud cover prevents the rays of the sun to penetrate our atmosphere and enlighten and warm the earth we too hide our inner light behind the cloak of cover, and in doing so we prevent the flow of energy from transmuting from ourselves to the rest of humanity that we are so intricately tied to.

I invite you all to find a way to be sure that your light is uncovered and even turn it up a notch and watch the results in your life. Feel the radiance from your inner self emanate, touch another, and then reflect back to you. Know that this form of interaction is the beginning of self healing and the drop in the pond to ripple out and heal the world.

~Sallie
